Profile of Joe Julian

Joe was born in San Francisco and grew up in the Fillmore District. He has a B.A. from San Francisco State University, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Washington in Sociology. He has taught a wide variety of courses, at the University of Washington, Kansas State University, the University of Nebraska, California State University, Bakersfield and San Francisco State University.


Dr. Julian's scholarly record includes his text Social Problems first published in 1973 and now in its twelfth edition. The text covers a number of social issues that are of great local and global concern (viz, Physical and Mental Health, Gender & Sexuality, Alcohol and Other Drugs, Crime and Violence, Poverty and Affluence, Racism, Prejudice and Discrimination, An Aging Society, The Changing Family, Problems of Education, Problems of Work and the Economy, Urban Problems, Population and Immigration, Technology and the Environment, and War and Global Insecurity).

His administrative experience includes being a department chairman, an administrative fellow, an Associate Dean, Dean of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences at SFSU, and the first University Dean for Human Relations at SFSU. After nearly twenty years as a university administrator, Dr. Julian returned to teaching sociology and devoting more time to community service, such as the Fair Employment & Housing Commission.
